Phrae (Province) Thailand

Thailand's former teak industry center boasts many old mansions built from this noble wood, as well as protected forests ideal for hiking and wildlife watching. It is an ancient and important community of northern Thailand, founded after Chiang Mai had established itself as the capital of the Thai Lanna kingdom. Phrae contains one of the largest reserves of teak forests in the country and is located on the banks of the Yom River, 555 kilometers north of Bangkok. Like Chiang Mai, Phrae retained its fortified old city, while the new city grew around it. While the new town is charming, the old one contains quiet alleys lined with teakwood houses, which are prominent examples of traditional Thai architecture and a number of beautiful temples. Many of these immense teak mansions were built by European merchants who were involved in the teak trade in the nineteenth century. In the province there are several national parks, some tribal villages in the remote mountains and a large number of teak forests. Phrae is a province full of legends and it is not surprising since the city was founded around the same time as the Lanna and Sukhothai Kingdoms almost 800 years ago.
